A modernist and feminist pioneer, Virginia Woolf carved out new territory for artists and particularly for women writers. Woolf (1882–1941) wrote with rare sensitivity and insight about the mystery, confusions and uncertainty of everyday life.

Part of her innovation was to reject traditional plots in favour of explorations of the inner lives of her characters, even those trapped in banal circumstances. Her stream of consciousness narratives bring sharp and fleeting glimpses into truths of gender relations, psychology and the power of the poetic perspective.

Our Virginia Woolf cover reproduces a page from “A Room of One’s Own,” a book-length essay written in 1929. It is regarded as a classic feminist work with its iconic and inspiring dictum, that “A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction.” We are excited to have this piece of literary history join our Embellished Manuscripts Collection in both Ultra and Mini formats.
