In these days of fear and uncertainty, we think it’s important to ground ourselves in the present moment rather than focusing on the future and the things we cannot control. Writer Elizabeth Gilbert recently posted on her Instagram account a coping and calming mechanism idea that we found very inspiring and we’d like to share with you. We invite you to try these easy yet healing steps.

Look at your current surroundings and write down:

  • 5 things that you can see
  • 4 things that you can hear
  • 3 things that you can feel
  • 2 things that you can smell
  • 1 thing that you can taste

Through connecting to our five senses, this exercise can help us stay in the moment and find a little bit of peace during worrisome times. “Now I’m here,” says Elizabeth Gilbert in a calm and soothing voice after going through her 5-4-3-2-1 list. “By doing that, I just returned to this place and this moment. And now I’m not in the future anymore which I cannot control. I’m actually here, and in this moment I am fine.”

We hope that wherever you are, you are safe. We are here with you.
