Released as part of our Spring 2013 catalogue, Paperblanks’ new Vintage Vogue collection of journals is routed in Art Deco Paris and the famed cabarets of France in the 1920’s and 30’s.

The collection is made up of one design, entitled “Plume”, and is available in three formats: Midi, Mini, and Micro.

Visit our products page to find out more about this collection. And read on to learn about the design’s fascinating origins.

Designed For a Cabaret Revue

The artwork on these covers originated from a program cover for a revue called “Nuits de Folies” (a revue, for those who don’t know, was a “type of multi-act popular theatrical entertainment that combined music, dance and sketches.”) The revue was held at one of Paris’ most legendary cabarets, the Folies-Bergère.

The artwork was originally drawn on paper with charcoal, watercolor and gouache by one of the revue’s costume designers, Alec Shanks. The work calls to mind the exuberant atmosphere the Folies-Bergère and other famed Parisian cabarets of its era; an atmosphere of showgirls, feathers, silks, bright colours and sequins glittering in the spotlight.

See below for the original artwork alongside more pictures of the journals.
