From unexpected quarters come unlikely pioneers. Florence Nightingale (1820–1910) was born to privilege in a time when young ladies of good breeding had few opportunities to feel truly useful. Nursing, in particular, was considered beyond the pale, yet the audacious Nightingale insisted on making it her vocation. She took a small and passionate nursing staff to the front lines of the Crimean War, offering solace to the wounded, and later founded the Nightingale School and Home for Nurses, the first secular nursing school.
With today, May 12th, being International Nurses Day (held annually on the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth), we thought it the ideal time to introduce our new Embellished Manuscript, Florence Nightingale, Letter of Inspiration journal. Featuring a handwritten excerpt from a fourteen-page letter that the famed nurse sent to her staff on January 1st, 1878, this new Paperblanks title is available in Mini and Ultra formats.
Nightingale’s entire letter can be read as part of the University of British Columbia’s Digital Library.
Florence was excellent writer, with a great feeling for accepting a certain balance between togetherness and loneliness.
Very well said. We couldn’t agree more! We’re happy to be able to share even a small sampling of her writing 🙂
Are these writing journals available for sale and where can I purchase one.
Hi Teresa,
Unfortunately our Florence Nightingale, Letter of Inspiration journal has been discontinued, but we offer a wide variety of other Embellished Manuscripts! To find a store near you, please visit our Store Locator at http://www.paperblanks.com/stores
Thanks!
Such a shame… I’ve been a nurse for 18 years and 2020 being the Bicentennial year of Florence Nightingales Birth and the year of the nurse and midwife, I can imagine many would have loved to have this journal. I personally would have ordered 5 for gifts and for myself too.
If we could keep everything in print, we would love to! There are so many inspiring potential Embellished Manuscript subjects out there 🙂
Hello – would you please consider reprinting this beautiful Florence Nightingale Embellished Manuscript Letter of Inspiration Journal to honor her 200th birthday as well as the Year of the Nurse 2020??
Thank you!
Hi Liz,
Thank you for the suggestion! While we would love to bring back all our favourite Embellished Manuscript designs for special anniversaries, it’s unfortunately not always possible. We are really excited about our new Spring 2020 Embellished Manuscripts and Special Editions, though, and will certainly take this idea into account for the future.
Thanks!
Thank you so much for your reply and for considering the suggestion!
Either journal size would be so nice to have in this special celebration year.
I will hope for the best!
Thank you!
