Living a creative life requires constant care and nourishment, the right amount of digging deep and letting things flow, holding on to ideas and releasing them. It might feel exhausting. Yet, in the words of Maya Angelou, “You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.” When you feel like your creativity is spent but you still want to explore it, try one of these tips to boost your creative nature.
Create Something for the Sake of Creating
No client work, no agenda, not even prompts or social media challenges – just create something for the sake of doing what you love, how you love it. Try a new technique, a new colour palette or a different style, just for you to remember why you fell in love with doing what you do.
Join a Creative Group
Connecting with people who share your interests and can provide honest and constructive feedback is so enriching. If you are not ready to share your work, being part of a creative group is also a great place to learn from your peers and feel inspired. A personal favourite is UPPERCASE Circle. If you are a subscriber to the magazine, this vibrant community hub is “a valuable source of motivation, inspiration and encouragement for like-minded and kind-hearted creative people from around the world.” Even better, find (or create!) an in-person group in your city where you can meet and inspire each other.
Listen to a Podcast
These days, access to our favourite creators is literally at our fingertips. Listening to your favourite author or artist sharing their journey (and their struggles) during an interview can be not only inspiring but enlightening. Here are some of our favourite podcasts for all things creative:
- The Lisa Congdon Sessions with Lisa Congdon
- The Jealous Curator: Art for Your Ear with Danielle Krysa
- The Accidental Creative with Todd Henry
- Draws in Spanish with Fabiola Lara
