Whether you’re stuck in a real rut or simply looking to enhance your skill set, it’s always beneficial to motivate yourself to improve. We’ve rounded up some great advice to help you become a better artist, starting today!
Better Goals
If you don’t push yourself, you’ll never know what you can accomplish. If there is a project that you would really love to be able to complete but have always assumed it was outside your comfort zone, it’s time to throw caution to the wind and take it on.
Better Content
It seems sort of obvious to “paint cool things,” but the subject matter truly is often as important as the skills with which its portrayed. If you’re repeatedly drawing, sketching, molding or otherwise representing the same objects, it’s time to try something new. Force yourself to take on a theme that you’ve never worked with before and you may just be surprised by what you create.
Better Fundamentals
If it seems like your projects are just not coming together in the way you envision, you may need to go back to basics to tackle the underlying issues. Colour, shading, composition and perspective all play foundational yet unheralded roles in a larger piece so it’s important to make sure you’re giving them the right attention. Try taking an art basics course, or study the technique of artists you admire, to see what you may be missing.
Better Confidence
If you don’t think your time spent creating art is worth it, you’re not going to create art worth anyone else’s time. Remind yourself that art is important and that you have something special to share with the world, and your projects will be imbued with a new sense of purpose.
Better Willpower
Sometimes sticking with it is the hardest part. If you want to make it as an artist, though, you need to put in the time. So make a commitment to work your skills and projects for a certain amount of time, and stick with it! The less you allow yourself to get distracted or give up, the more you will allow yourself the time to improve.
