It’s hard to believe it’s been over two years since we profiled our first Beautiful Bookstore. What was meant to be a one-time feature of what we proposed could be “Book Heaven,” has turned into a popular competition as readers continued to suggest their favourite bookstores as possible contenders.
Well, every good competition has to come to an end sometime, so we’ve looked back through our online comments and social media reactions to see which bookstore should be officially crowned The Most Beautiful Bookstore in the World.
Before we announce the winner though, here’s a reminder (in no particular order) of the diverse candidates:
- Atlantis Books
- Akateenminen Kirjakauppa
- Waanders In de Broeren
- Lello & Irmão
- Polare Maastricht
- El Ateneo
- Cook & Book
- La Librarie PTYX
- Bjäre Bokhandel
- Munro’s Books
And the winner is…
Porto, Portugal’s Lello & Irmão!
This Gothic-inspired Art Nouveau architectural masterpiece has warmth, luxury and a rich literary history: Its gorgeous staircase is said to have inspired J.K. Rowling while creating Hogwarts!
A big “congratulations” to all the amazing competitors in the search for the most beautiful bookstore. It’s inspiring to see that, even in our increasingly digital age, printed books are still valued enough to inspire much amazing art and architecture in their honour.
