At Paperblanks we love books and movies, so we asked our staff about their favourite onscreen bookshops. In this new blog series we’ll show you the bookshops we found in some of our favourite movies.
In Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Clementine (played by Kate Winslet) decides to erase the memories of her turbulent relationship with Joel (Jim Carrey) by contacting a New York company that specialises in this treatment. When Joel discovers what Clementine has done he too pays a visit to Dr. Howard Mierzwiak (Tom Wilkinson), the creator of the memory-erasing process, and undergoes the same treatment to cope with the breakup in the same way.
However, things don’t run smoothly for Joel, and as he revisits each slowly disappearing memory he realises that he’s still in love with Clementine.

In the movie, Kate Winslet’s character works as a sales assistant at a Barnes & Noble bookshop on Long Island, New York. These scenes were actually filmed at the Columbia University bookshop, located at Broadway and W. 115th Street in New York City, but the university preferred that its name not be mentioned in the movie. In one scene, the titles of the books and other signs around them have been digitally erased to represent Joel’s fading memory of that day. (Copyright© FOCUS Features)
We don’t want to give away the ending, so you’ll have to watch the movie if you want to find out what happens with Clementine and Joel.
