At Paperblanks we love books and movies; so we asked our staff what their favourite bookshops on screen are. In this blog series we’ll show you the bookshops we found in some of our favourite movies.
You’ve Got Mail is a romantic comedy starring Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks. Joe Fox (Tom Hanks) is the owner of a bookstore chain and Katherine Kelly (Meg Ryan) is a small bookshop owner who he falls for online. Both are unaware that she runs the small shop that his company puts out of business.

The bookshop in this film is named The Shop Around the Corner. This is in reference to the 1940’s movie of the same name which You’ve Got Mail is loosely based on. The exterior of the shop is located on West 69th street in New York but the interior was built in a film studio at Chelsea Piers, New York, NY 10011.

Kathleen Kelly’s bookstore in the movie was based mainly on Books of Wonder on 18th Street in the Chelsea area of Manhattan. Prior to filming Meg Ryan had worked at this bookstore for a day as part of her preparation for the movie. In the movie, we can see Meg Ryan reading Boy: Tales of Childhood, a children’s novel written by Roald Dahl.
