It’s one of the most heart-breaking personal diary entries we’ve ever read – but also, in it’s way, a testament to the immensity of Teddy Roosevelt’s love for his wife Alice.
On February 14th, 1884 – not only Valentine’s Day but also the 4th anniversary of Roosevelt’s marriage to Alice – Roosevelt lost both his mother and his wife. His diary entry for that dark day? A large “X” and a simple, heartbreaking sentence: “The light has gone out of my life.”
Roosevelt’s diary is filled with evidence of his sweeping love for Alice. It has a great many entries and stories about her. Another entry, for example, revealed that Roosevelt “wooed her for over a year before [he] won her.”
