Auguste Rodin (1840–1917) was one of the art world’s original bad boys. His masterful bronze and marble figures made him one of the most famous and controversial artists of the 19th century. Even today, a century later, his work continues to provoke, fascination and inspire.

This year marks an especially significant point in Rodin’s legacy – that of the 100th anniversary of his death. To honour this larger-than-life artist we have brought his handwriting back to our Paperblanks collection.

Featuring a note originally offered as our Rodin, Letter to Rilke journal, this Special Edition design also showcases his iconic statue The Thinker on the back cover. The letter adorning the front cover is addressed to Rainer Maria Rilke, the German-language poet who was greatly devoted to Rodin and wrote an influential monograph about him. The mossy green hue and metallic-tinted details of this Special Edition represent the distinct colour that bronze sculptures acquire when exposed to the elements. For full details, please check our Special Edition Rodin’s 100th Anniversary webpage.

And we’re not alone in celebrating Rodin this year. Art institutions around the world are putting on commemorative exhibitions, including the Legion of Honor in San Francisco, MOMA in New York, the Museo Soumaya in Mexico City, the Rodin Museum in Philadelphia, the Portland Art Museum in Oregon and, of course, the Musée Rodin in Paris.
