1) Please tell us a little about yourself

My name is Zoé, and I use Keiko as an alias. Keiko is the name of the orca that starred in the Free Willy movies and was later released. When I was a little girl, I fell in love with this orca as well as the ocean and everything about the environment. I am truly passionate about the environment; it drives and stimulates me in my everyday life and my studies. I’m completing a masters degree at business school where I am specialising in sustainable development. Before that, I attended law school. I would like to work in sustainable development consulting, and maybe one day find a way to clean the ocean!

As a result, my favourite quote is from Gandhi: “You must be the change you wish to see in the world.”

I have always lived in France but I have travelled to the United States, Venezuela, the Caribbean and a few countries in Europe such as Spain, England and Ireland. I would love to find an internship in New Zealand. You can find wild orcas there! Costa Rica appeals to me as well!

Speaking of that, I’m currently participating in the Green Miss 2015 contest. Green Miss is an online contest created to finance environmental protection actions to achieve concrete and measurable results. If I win, I would be able to go to Costa Rica and make a documentary on biodiversity protection.

When I’m not being a student, I am also the president of a student association for Sustainable Development and International Solidarity. We operate in Nepal, India, Togo, Argentina, Burkina Faso, Peru and the Philippines. We’re also involved in local initiatives such as raising awareness, social responsibility consulting, blood donation, wheelchair basketball games, etc.

2) For readers who haven’t had a chance to check out your Get Green or Die Trying blog, could you tell us a little about it?

I would say that my blog is essentially about responsible consumption: tips and tricks to consume in a responsible and reasoned way, how to live more healthily and to find out the truth about some products… But also to highlight the actions of some companies and to know what we can do, on our own, to live better while protecting the environment. The main goal is to inform people and to motivate them, not to kill them!

3) How was it that you got into lifestyle blogging?

I was trying to change my lifestyle to make it match with my principles. Then I educated myself on many things and started to share the information with those around me. Soon I found that people had lots of questions for me, or were asking me to explain something again or requesting some advice. I realised it would be interesting to share my findings and all the questions I have been asked as well as sharing my experiences and opinions, so I created this blog.

I know that I’m not perfectly consistent with all of my principles but this is also the “blog of an imperfect lover of nature.” My goal is to keep trying to improve myself and never give up. Maybe I won’t be able to accomplish this, but I won’t stop trying and that’s where the name of the blog comes from.

4) We’re always impressed with the creative ways people use our journals, but your Equinoxe Azure project was the first time we’ve seen a secret compartment carved out. What inspired you to create this?

In my hometown there is a big stationery shop that often changed its name and ownership, but you could almost always find Paperblanks notebooks. I used to go there very often and spent a lot of time spinning the display around and around, trying to decide which was the best journal. That’s why, when you buy one and finish it, I don’t understand how you could bring yourself to just throw it out! Even though it is recyclable and recycled, that would be a waste… But what else can you do with it? The idea of having too many unnecessary items and clutter goes completely against my principles, so I had to come up with a solution. Then, when I was looking at the small pouch in the back cover, I thought back to images of movies where the pages of books were cut to hide things discreetly. Voilà! It was large enough to make a box, and I was giving immortality to my notebook! Paperblanks is focussed on their social and environmental commitments, so I knew that this notebook already had a place on my blog.

5) We’ll link to your blog post with the instructions, of course, but are there any additional tips you can share with someone wanted to attempt this at home?

I think that you should not be afraid to make a mess with the pages! The first page is not carved to serve as a fig leaf. You just need to be careful anytime you use a box cutter. Better to take your time than to end up wounded and with a blood-stained book!

6) We have to know – did you write in the journal first, or start with a fresh one?

I wrote in the journal and finished it first; that was actually the problem and that’s the reason why I tried to find a solution to give it a second life! Now I’m using the beautiful Bukhara in the Ultra format. I’ll have to find another way to repurpose this one…

7) Any advice you would share with other writers hoping to have their blog take off?

I think you should always remain true to yourself without being cliché. That is to say, be honest in your blog, and follow your principles. I think that readers can sense through your words when you’re being fake.

Rapidement je me suis rendue compte qu’on venait souvent me poser de nouvelles questions, qu’on me demandait de réexpliquer certaines choses, ou me demandait conseil.

  1. That project looks amazing !! I am an obsessive collector of rings (I currently have around 20) and when I saw the final picture of the book with the jewelry in it I knew what I just had to do – make a ring holder out of a Paperblanks book, with individual holes to fit the rings. I’m so excited that I just bought the book to do it 😀 Thankyou Keiko and Paperblanks for giving me this idea!!
