Earth-Day-Gaylord-Nelson
Motifs of nature and conservation are incredibly prevalent in the arts, from the paintings of Canadian naturalist Robert Bateman to Dr. Seuss’ classic children’s book (and the various movie adaptations) The Lorax. There are not many artists, however, who can boast the prolificness with which Robert Frost produced works inspired by the natural world. From long walks in the forest (“Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening”) to meditations on the end of the world (“Fire and Ice”), Frost’s poetic works are some of the best-known and well-loved examples of environmental art. In honour of Earth Day 2014, we thought we would share with you just one of Frost’s many nature-themed poems, the oft-quoted “Nothing Gold Can Stay.”

Nothing Gold Can Stay

Nature’s first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf’s a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf,
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day
Nothing gold can stay.

-Robert Frost

How are you helping in the fight against climate change and to maintain as clean an environment as possible?

  1. Hello: we are a small catering business in Los Angeles and would love to use your graphic as our earth day greeting on Instagram this Saturday, April 22. We would credit your website for it as you and we just found you on Instagram so we will tag you as well. Is that possible? We love your site! Best, Shimaali

    • Hi Shimaali,

      Our apologies for not seeing this in time! Our blogger was on a mini-vacation last week (enjoying all that Vancouver has to offer on Earth Day) and we missed your comment. Your brownies look absolutely mouthwatering and we’re flattered that you would have liked to use our image on your page. You are most welcome to it in the future!

      Best,
