Los Angeles artist Mike Stilkey paints and draws not only on vintage paper, record covers and book pages, but on the book covers as well! Using a mix of ink, colored pencil, paint and lacquer Stilkey creates whimsical, and at times melancholic, painted sculptures of arranged books. Reminiscent of Weimar-era German expressionism, Stilkey’s art has been exhibited throughout the United States and internationally at galleries and museums such as the Bristol City Museum in the UK, LeBasse Projects and Kinsey/DesForges Gallery in Culver City, CA, David B. Smith Gallery in Denver, CO, Gilman Contemporary Gallery in Ketchum, ID, and Rice University Gallery in Houston, TX.
The time-lapse video below shows Stilkey creating a piece called “Discarded Romance” for the Fully Booked Bonifacia High Street bookstore in Manila.
