Looks like we have a new contender for the most beautiful bookstore in the world!
The above photo depicts the El Ateneo, a downtown Buenos Aires theater that was converted into a bookstore! Amazingly the store has integrated many elements of the old theater into the bookstore experience. The stage, for example, is now a reading area and café, and the former opera boxes are now small reading rooms. It’s undeniably the most regal and operatic bookstore you’ll ever lay eyes on!
Hello, it’s really very beautiful. And what about this one:

Hi Petra,
That’s a great article about the Polare Maastricht! We actually featured this bookstore back in September, but I didn’t find this article in my research. Thanks for the extra information!

In the 1960s it was a theater (Teatro Grand Esplendid). I attended elementary school around the corner (Escuela Argentina Modelo) and every year at the end of the school year, the school rented the theater and we gave a performance and a small concert for our parents.
Without a doubt El Ateneo did an incredible job restoring the place. When you walk into it you have a feeling of a grandiose atmosphere, elegant and sophisticated.
Now, 50 years later, I live in Canada, but I was very pleased to see this photograph and remember those moments.
Hi Claudio,
What a treat that must have been to perform in such a beautiful theatre! I would love to be able to visit Buenos Aires and El Ateneo one day.
Thanks for the background information on the theatre. We’re glad we could provide you with a little trip down memory lane!
All the best,
